ABVP protest at Mumbai University

MUMBAI: Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP) members disrupted Mumbai University's Foundation Day celebrations on Monday by barging into the Fort campus, vandalizing property and injuring a security guard.

The group was protesting against the delay in declaring BA and BCom results. TNN

"BCom and BA results are delayed by a month. We went there to bring to light the plight of students. When we were trying to get into the convocation hall, a glass broke and injured a security guard. It wasn't intentional," said Raju Chauhan, ABVP's organising secretary. A senior police officer of Azad Maidan police station said, "We have arrested 16 students on charges of unlawful assembly. They will be produced in the court on Tuesday." The university officials are planning to withdraw the complaint against them.

University officials are shocked at the students' behaviour. "University officials never deny meeting any student. However, these ABVP volunteers didn't intimate us of their protest and jumped in from the compound wall, broke glasses of a heritage building as well as injured security personnel. This is not ethical," said Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.

The University of Mumbai’s 155th foundation day ended with a bitter note due hundreds of students staging an agitation, demanding immediate declaration of B Com and BA results.

Since the students did not have police permission for the morcha, university security personnel did not allow them inside, after which, a few students pelted stones and jumped from walls into the campus. 2 security guards were injured in this incident.

Meanwhile even the BJP on Monday threatened to stage a protest outside the university’s Kalina campus until the university announced the dates for declaring the results of degree college exams.

“Results of degree college exams have to be declared within 45 days of the last exam paper. Three months have passed and the university has not declared the results. This will have serious repercussions on a student’s academic year,” said Amit Satam, general secretary, BJP’s youth wing.

“We had appealed to the university to do it earlier, but since they have failed to do so, we will be staging a protest outside the university gates on Tuesday and meet the controller of exams and force him to announce the dates, he added.
